We’ve just taken delivery of a Volterion 5kW/13kWh vanadium flow battery system.
It’ll sit as a reference unit for us — generating real telemetry and cycling data as we explore where long-duration, high-cycle storage makes sense across different applications, from off-grid to residential, small commercial, community and beyond.
Unlike lithium, a vanadium flow battery stores its energy in a water-based electrolyte that doesn’t burn — so there’s no thermal runaway to design around. That changes what’s possible on siting and safety, and it’s one of the things we want to characterise properly with real data.
This unit will also help generate the evidence we need to support broader industry recognition, certification and standards for flow battery technology in Australia.
