The Renewable Energy Waste Crisis: How Energy Storage Can Unlock Billions in Untapped Power

Australia is producing record amounts of renewable energy, yet a significant portion of it is going to waste. Recently, more than 27% of wind and solar energy in New South Wales was curtailed due to grid limitations, effectively spilling energy that could have powered thousands of homes.

As the shift towards renewable energy accelerates, this inefficiency is expected to grow unless we address the root of the problem—energy storage. Current forecasts suggest that by mid-century, up to 20% of all renewable energy could be wasted. Curtailment isn’t just a technical issue; it’s a massive economic opportunity waiting to be unlocked through innovation in energy storage (ABC News – Australia ‘wasting’ record amounts of renewable energy as share of wind and solar soars).

At Australian Flow Batteries (AFB), we believe the solution is clear: robust, scalable energy storage systems like our Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs). These systems offer a long-duration, non-degrading, and sustainable energy storage solution that can support grid stability, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and minimise energy waste.

The Investment Opportunity

The global energy storage market is projected to hit USD 435 billion by 2030, with Australia contributing USD 8.7 billion. As one of the most scalable and durable battery technologies available, VRFBs present a strong value proposition for industrial and residential sectors.

By investing in energy storage, you’re not only supporting a cleaner, more resilient grid, but you’re also tapping into a high-growth market. With over 3.2 million Australian homes equipped with rooftop solar and growing demand for energy storage, the potential for VRFBs to capture market share is significant.

AFB has already proven its ability to deliver tangible results, with our Diesel Replacement Systems cutting CO2 emissions and reducing diesel consumption in remote and off-grid applications. In projects like AMC Henderson, our VRFBs have achieved a renewable energy fraction (REF) of up to 83% during high-load periods.

Why Now?

Every day, more renewable energy is being generated than ever before, and without sufficient storage, much of it is going to waste. The time to invest in energy storage solutions is now. With AFB’s innovative VRFB technology, we’re not just storing energy—we’re storing the future.
